The midnight of today marked the 68th year of India as an independent nation. Reaching another milestone, the day gives every Indian a sense of unparalleled pride for the country which is the foot of our existence.
The day with itself brings such a joy, that all around us we find everyone in a patriotic zeal. From those old men on a park bench, relishing their golden times in the country, to those little kids in school uniforms running their bicycles down the street with the handles proudly displaying our Tiranga.
Amid all the pride and frolic, its surely a good time to flip through the pages of our achievements in all these years. Let us have a quick review of a few best from a great lot. Tough job, though.
1. Unity and Integrity
With a large number of ethnic groups, and major diversity across races, India is one successful nation in binding all of it together. Its unity and integrity is one such trait, admired across the world.
A widely known fact is that India is one of the largest democracy in the world. We take pride in being the only nation to have given the right to vote since the very first day of its independence.
Further adding to privileges to its people, we had the enactment of Right to Information Act (RTI) in 2005.
3. Our endeavors in Space
Despite lacking in high end resources and equipment, India has travelled far in the field of Space technology. Talk about the launch of its first satellite Aryabhatta, in 1975, its first moon probe Chandrayan 1 in 2008, or our highly acclaimed Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalayan) in 2014. Our country has definitely achieved a lot to mark its space in this field. An these are just a few strands of the feathers in our cap.
4. Nuclear and Missile Programs
Nothing can define India’s prowess with better pride than these two.
Formulated by Dr.H.J. Bhabha in the 1950s, India’s three-stage nuclear power programme contributed a great deal to securing the country’s long term energy independence, focusing on the utilization of the abundantly available Thorium as a resource.
Leading the nation with missile systems like Agni, Prithvi, Akash and Nag, we also share the pride of heading the world’s fastest cruise missile programme BrahMos, jointly with Russia.
All of these added to the strengthening of the nation’s military capital as well.
5. Our Sportsman Spirit.
Dwelling on our achievements in the field of sports, we have a sturdy list to go through. Be it the nation’s latest triumph in the Wimbledon championship, or the multiple wins in CWG’14, India is finally rising up a great deal in this area.
We nestle achievers from various areas. Cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil dev, hockey ace Dhyan Chand, tennis star Sania, rising badminton champion Saina, grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwara Dutta….you start naming and you can’t stop. These are a few names from a grand crowd of Indian sport stars.
6. Entertainment Factor.
Entertainment is one such area where India is continuously climbing the ladder, setting up a niche every year. Stepping up from the regular drama stories, we have seen the emergence of directors like Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Sujoy Ghosh with their brilliant pieces like Gangs of Wasseypur, Queen, and Kahaani, creating a thunder on the big screen.
Internationally too, India has managed to grab many an eyeballs with its movies like Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan making it to the nominated list of Academy Awards. The country is also home to Academy and Grammy award winners like singer and composer A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar, musical stalwart Zakir Hussain, and renowned Sitar player Pt. Ravishankar, to name a few.
7. Polio Eradication
In a one of its kind achievement, India was announced as a polio-free region by the World Health organization, in March 2014. Since the case of young girl paralyzed by polio in January 2011, in West Bengal, no other case has been reported. This is one high end feat, a proud entry in India’s list of achievements.
8. The Software Industry
From being nowhere on the list till about 20 years ago, the nation has taken a huge leap in the software sector, providing job opportunities to a hoard of geniuses in the country. And not just that, Indian city Bangalore is proudly called the Silicon Valley of India.
PARAM 8000, is a shining example of India’s progress in this industry. PARAM, standing for Parallel Machine, is a the nation’s first supercomputer conceptualized in the year 1991, by Vijay P.Bhatkar.
These were a few leaves from India’s colorful catalogue of glory. There still stand thousands of miles long of achievements in our country’s name. And in multiple areas. Call it India’s triumph on the army front, the beauty of its literature, the art and craft industry, slow in pace but the growing economy, or its cultural richness……there is a lot that defines India.
And we shouldn’t forget to take pride in that.
Happy Independence Day!
